2009 sees a big change in the fashion world as the effects of the global credit crunch set it. Although elegance and style will not be sacrificed, one can expect to see fewer independent designers able to make their mark, as the larger fashion houses dominate. Fashion institutions such as Dolce and Gabbana, Fendi and Burberry are examples of designers who have really stepped up their game this year to counteract the threat of the international recession.

Dolce and Gabbana have debuted their looks for spring/summer and autumn already, pioneering sharp tailoring in shades of charcoal grey, chocolate brown and black. The D&G spring/summer collection is very representative of the fashion trends coming up this season. Formalwear is very fitted and elegant, emulating movie star chicness, combining masculine colours and lines with effeminate accessories. Accessories include leather bags, skinny ties, leather jackets and thick-rimmed black glasses. More casual looks still include elements of the formal collection, with fitted shirts, skinny ties, glasses and messenger bags all included. Colours for casual wear are classy and timeless, like racing green, charcoal, navy blue, chocolate brown and cream. Most items are plain in colour with little pattern in order to create a smart and timeless look. Jeans are paired with smart polo shirts, chunky knit sweaters and fitted brown leather jackets. The overall feel of the campaign is very much 40s/50s glamour and chic, with the leather jackets and aviators very reminiscent of wartime fashion.

Other designers such as Fendi and Burberry are also pioneering tailored looks, injecting a touch of formality to casual clothing. Similarly to D&G, many of the top fashion houses have designed simple smart pieces for 2009 and this is something that has been reflected in high street fashion too.

As shown by both high street shops and top designers, trends for Autumn/Winter are a continuation of the spring/summer themes, with additions such large single breasted coats, fur and chunky scarves. Autumn and Winter shoes are also more sturdy, swapping the summers smart black shoe for pointy ended shoes and boots as found in ultimate 81. Whether summer or winter, it seems the trench coat will be a key piece, able to go with both formal and casual outfits and practical for all kinds of weather. If you want to look fashionable but cannot afford the hefty designer price tags, then splurging on a trench coat will be a good investment. You can then pair the key piece with plain v neck jumpers, smart polo shirts and chunky scarves. If a trench coat doesn`t interest you, then investing in a good quality brown leather jacket or messenger bag can help update your look.
